This land in the San Joaquin Valley was first settled upon by the Yokuts Indians nearly eight millennia ago. Back then Bakersfield had unobstructed views of the mountains, rivers, and lakes nearby. It was only in 1776 that the first European, Father Francisco Garces, set foot on the land.
Nearly a century later, in 1851, the Kern River showed man that it harbored gold and fourteen years hence, black gold (oil) was discovered beneath the valley. During this time, people started coming to Bakersfield. Many of the earlier residents came from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Southern California, and Arkansas.
The name Bakersfield comes from the field of alfalfa that California state senator Colonel Thomas Baker planted and grew in the city for travelers to nourish their horses with. Baker helped subsidize the development of this section of Kern County, he even built public sawmills and assisted the families who relocated to the area. For his goodness, the residents of Bakersfield Real Estate named the city after him during its foundation in 1869.
